EXTENDICARE KAPUSKASING – MEDIA UPDATE

As of 4:00 pm on Tuesday January 26, Extendicare Kapuskasing has received one additional positive result among residents. Through our weekly staff testing clinic, we have received four additional positive results for team members, one of which Porcupine Health Unit has confirmed has been resolved.

The home continues to meet daily with the Porcupine Health Unit, Sensenbrenner Hospital, Ontario Health, our Local Health Integration Network team and the Ministry of Long-Term Care. All parties are working together to protect residents and staff.

At this time, we have 28 residents with active cases of COVID-19. All residents continue to isolate in their rooms, where they are being provided with meals and individual care and support. We have six active cases among our care team, all of whom are recovering in self-isolation at home until cleared by Public Health to return to work. A total of three of these staff member cases are now considered resolved.

ONGOING OUTBREAK DEFENSE

Our residents will continue to be screened twice daily for signs or symptoms of COVID-19, as has been our protocol since the onset of the pandemic, to ensure any change in health status is identified immediately. Medical assessments of our residents are ongoing, by our registered staff and with guidance from the physician on-site from Sensenbrenner hospital. We have enhanced infection prevention and control protocols in place and additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements for staff – including full gowns, face shields and masks for all shifts.

We are proactively auditing the proper use of PPE, hand hygiene and cleaning services with our staff, and the entire home remains under strict contact and droplet precaution protocols. We will continue to work closely with our health partners, including adhering to guidance from Public Health on infection prevention and control (IPAC) best practices.

We will continue to do all we can to limit risk of exposure to the people we care for and the staff who support them.
