EXTENDICARE KAPUSKASING – MEDIA UPDATE

We have received the results from yesterday’s swabbing of negative residents as well as from our weekly testing of all staff. All results have come back negative. As of 11:00 am today, we have no new resident or staff cases to report.

We continue to have 3 residents with active cases of COVID-19 in our home, one of whom is in hospital. All residents continue to isolate in their rooms, where they are being provided with meals and individual care and support.

We continue to have 9 active cases among our staff, all of whom are in self-isolation until they are cleared to return to work by public health. All staff in the home remain cohorted to a single area to help prevent the potential for spread between home areas.

UPDATE FROM PORCUPINE PUBLIC HEALTH UNIT

We received confirmation this morning from the Porcupine Health Unit that testing results seeking to confirm the potential variant of concern have come back negative. The Public Health Laboratory has determined the initial positive screen indicating this potential have resulted from a lab reporting error. With that said, we will continue to remain vigilant in our infection prevention and control measures.

ONGOING OUTBREAK DEFENSE

The home continues to meet daily with the Porcupine Health Unit, Sensenbrenner Hospital, Ontario Health, our Local Health Integration Network team and the Ministry of Long-Term Care. All parties are working together to respond to the outbreak and ensure enhanced levels of care.

The team from Timmins and District Hospital continues to be on site, focusing on enhanced infection prevention and control (IPAC) practices. The IPAC specialist from one of our sister Extendicare homes in Ottawa remains onsite this week to assist with auditing and supporting our team.

We continue to follow public health direction and operate under an abundance of caution to limit the spread of the virus. Our focus remains on protecting our residents and team members, supporting our staff and keeping our families and community informed.
