EXTENDICARE KAPUSKASING – MEDIA UPDATE

As of 11:00 am today, we have no new resident or staff cases to report.

Working with public health, an additional 4 residents have been declared resolved since our update yesterday, meaning they tested positive more than 14 days ago and are no longer infectious.

In total, we now have 3 residents with active cases of COVID-19 in our home, one of whom is in hospital. All residents continue to isolate in their rooms, where they are being provided with meals and individual care and support.

Public health has declared an additional 5 staff cases now resolved. We now have 9 active cases among our staff, all of whom are in self-isolation until they are cleared to return to work by public health. All staff in the home remain cohorted to a single area to help prevent spread between home areas.

ONGOING OUTBREAK DEFENSE

The home continues to meet daily with the Porcupine Health Unit, Sensenbrenner Hospital, Ontario Health, our Local Health Integration Network team and the Ministry of Long-Term Care. All parties are working together to respond to the outbreak and ensure enhanced levels of care.

All negative residents have been swabbed again this morning, and all staff will be swabbed again tomorrow, as part of our continued surveillance efforts, in keeping with directives from the Porcupine Health Unit.

The team from Timmins and District Hospital continues to be on site, focusing on enhanced infection prevention and control (IPAC) practices. The IPAC specialist from one of our sister Extendicare homes in Ottawa remains onsite this week to assist with auditing and supporting our team.

We continue to follow public health direction and operate under an abundance of caution to limit the spread of the virus, recognizing how challenging this remains for our residents, families and our staff.

STAFF SUPPORT

We are working with Sensenbrenner Hospital to ensure our team members have the mental health supports they need during this difficult time, through counseling and services provided by both Extendicare and the hospital. Working together, we will continue to support our staff, keep our community informed, and do all we can to protect those in our care.
