EXTENDICARE KAPUSKASING – MEDIA UPDATE

As of 11:00am today, as a result of our ongoing resident testing, we have one new case to report among our residents.

However, working with public health, an additional 3 residents have been declared resolved since our update yesterday, meaning they tested positive more than 14 days ago and are no longer infectious.

In total, we have 11 residents with active cases of COVID-19 in our home, with one resident in hospital. All residents continue to isolate in their rooms, where they are being provided with meals and individual care and support.

All results received from our weekly staff testing clinic on Monday have been negative, and we continue to have no new cases to report among our care team. In total, we have 14 active cases among our staff, all of whom are in self-isolation until they are cleared to return to work by public health. All staff remain cohorted to a single area in the home to help prevent spread between home areas.

ONGOING OUTBREAK DEFENSE

The home continues to meet daily with the Porcupine Health Unit, Sensenbrenner Hospital, Ontario Health, our Local Health Integration Network team and the Ministry of Long-Term Care. All parties are working together to respond to the outbreak and ensure enhanced levels of care.

The team from Timmins and District Hospital continues to be on site, focusing on enhanced infection prevention and control (IPAC) practices, including education and training of staff and active audits on appropriate environmental cleaning, Personal Protective Equipment and hand hygiene practices on all shifts. The IPAC specialist from one of our sister Extendicare homes in Ottawa remains onsite this week to assist with auditing and supporting our team.

All team members have been swabbed again today. We will continue to test both residents and staff rigorously to identify any new instances of the virus as soon as possible. Our team continues to follow public health direction and operate under an abundance of caution to limit the spread of the virus, recognizing how challenging this remains for our residents, families and our staff.

We’re grateful to our community for their ongoing support.
